Pally healing, ring enchants

So due the greatness that is dual-speccing, I’m a new holy pally with better than average new holy pally gear. I have only one piece of blue gear (my shoulders) and no green gear at all. In the LFG channel, I nervously click the “I are healer” checkbox since it’s sort of a misnomer when it comes to my mad healing skillz.

When I do get picked up by a group, I ask “am I healing or hurting?”. When they tell me that I’m healing, I tell them that I’m a noob healer. Then I notice that everybody usually targets me. My assumption is that it’s to inspect me.

Some dude said “LOL, liar, nice gear noob”. That’s when I have to tell them “my healing gear is epic, my healing skill is not” – I’m going to macro that cuz I’m tired of typing it. I let them know that I’ve never solo healed before and that I’ve only healed 10 and 25man raids where I always have someone to somewhat cover my ass.

Now, having said all of that, HEALING IS FUN SHIT, despite what some people think!

Perhaps it’s because I’m new to healing and am only used to tanking or dps’ing, but it is very fun to me! In the first heroic VH I did, there were only two deaths (sorry random mage, I blew my Holy Shock since I momentarily forgot which mouse button it was keyed to; here, have a Sacred Sheild – woops, I’ll rez/buff you in a few seconds) and no wipes. I healed another VH later (after the reset an hour later). Then I healed heroic UK, despite my not-knowing how long I couldn’t heal after the last boss does his silencing thing. In case you’re wondering, I got silenced, so I didn’t wait long enough.

In other news, I finally got my ring enchants, 2x19sp for my holy gear and 2x32ap for my ret gear! My enchanting is at 405 now. I don’t plan on advancing it further than that, but it might happen eventually. My unbuffed spell power is over 2k in my holy gear. My self-buffed ap is just under 4200 in my ret gear.

My glyph selection is very weak at the moment, for both of my specs. The scribes must be making a TON of money right now – good for them. It’s amazing that some people will buy a glyph for 300-400gold.

I (re-)started fishing too! I’m up to about 200 so far. The new fishing dailys are pretty cool. I really like that I can start to level my cooking with the new fish that I’m getting. Being able to fish from outside of VH is very cool stuff. I find that if I can fish while I’m in LFG, I don’t get so bothered at how long it takes to get a group for .

3.0.8 is finally live! Prot pally changes

The only thing that I didn’t like about tanking H Gundrak was that I felt I has too little health. Then I remembered I could make one of the stamina-oriented trinkets that jewelcrafters can make, the Monarch Crab and I would still be above the raid crit cap of 540 defense!

I added a Solid Sky Sapphire gem and a Solid Dragon’s Eye gem to it and with the stam bonus, received an extra 137 stam from that trinket alone! Right now, I have 24,544 health. These numbers are based on the rules of 3.0.3.

Health Pool

Since 3.0.8 was [finally] released today, I get a few buffs to my gear. For my tanking helm, I currently have the Tempered Titansteel Helm.

3.0.3 helm stats

In this patch, this helm gets a new blue gem slot AND a meta gem slot. The blue gem will be filled with a Solid Sky Sapphire gem and the meta gem will be filled with a Austere Earthsiege Diamond. These two gems will give me 56 more stamina, for an additional 560 health.

3.0.8 helm stats

Also in 3.0.8 is a new bracer enchant that gives 40 stamina. So now I’m up to 96 more stamina or 960 health.

Yet another change for prot pally tanks is that the prot talent Sacred Duty now gives 8% stamina (up from 6%). I don’t know the exact number that works out to in my current gear but I’m sure it will be enough to give me over 100 extra stamina (or 1,000 extra health).

All of these stamina increases will put me over 25.5k health, unbuffed! Whatever problems I had with my health pool are now over. I feel very good with the amount of health I have for tanking heroics.

Prot gear to push me over 20,000 health

I put on my prot gear this morning, got a Frosthide Leg Armor kit filled in the empty gems slots green gem slots I had and logged out before work. When I left home, I was sitting at just under 20k health.

I want my health to be 24,000 unbuffed. I’ve been looking over the spreadsheet I made yesterday, trying to determine what I can get that will bump my health to at least 22k but much closer to the 24k mark.

After about an hour, I have created yet another spreadsheet that notes how I can almost reach my goal. I’ve found 197 extra stam, 41 extra defense and some other stats as well. I have a net increase of every stat across the board (I believe). The mats for these upgrades are very cheap in my opinion, especially for what I’m getting in return.

Notice that none of the gear I’ve listed includes either of the major stamina trinkets that jewelcrafters can create! Once I get that, I should be over 25k health!

Obtainable prot gear

I created a spreadsheet over at Google Docs so that I can just modify the spreadsheet as my situation changes and this post will be automatically updated as the spreadsheet is changed. Seems simple and efficient, right?

This is all pre-raid gear since who know when I’ll step foot in Naxx, if ever. There are also tabs for enchants and gems.
